For over three decades, Dr. Betsy Coe stood as a visionary force in the Montessori world, leaving an indelible mark on the education of countless students and educators and students across the globe. As the Executive Director of The Houston Montessori Center from 1988 to 2023, her passion for Montessori education and unwavering dedication to its dissemination remained the driving force behind the center's enduring legacy.
Dr. Coe's journey as a Montessori educator began in 1972, when she received her initial training from esteemed instructors Margaret Homfray and Phoebe Child. This early exposure laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to the Montessori method, one that would see her go on to earn credentials at every level of Montessori education, from infant and toddler to administration.
Her years of teaching experience, spanning early childhood and elementary levels, equipped her with the insights necessary to pioneer the establishment of Montessori middle and high schools, breaking new ground in an era when such programs were rare. In 1992, she created the Houston Montessori Center's AMS Secondary course, a significant contribution that helped pave the way for the growth of Montessori education at the secondary level.
Adult learners at all levels, particularly those Dr. Coe worked closest with, reflect frequently about the profound impact she had on them personally, their teaching, and even their own family members. As demanding as Dr. Coe’s schedule was, she possessed an uncanny ability to make each person feel as though they had her undivided attention. This gift of being fully present, combined with her enduring kindness, enormous compassion, and fierce yet loving advocacy for every child and adolescent's inherent value, became contagious, inspiring countless individuals who had the privilege of working alongside her.
Beyond her local impact, Dr. Coe's influence extended far beyond the borders of Houston. As a past president and long-time board member of the American Montessori Society, she held various leadership positions, shaping the direction of Montessori teacher education nationwide. Her expertise was in high demand, leading her to consult and speak at Montessori conferences, the United Nations, the Hague Appeal for Peace, Montessori Model United Nations, and other global events focused on world peace and adolescent development.
Dr. Coe's dedication to the Montessori method was recognized through numerous accolades, including the AMS 2008 Living Legacy and the MACTE 2016 Wisdom of the Elders award. Her impact extended even to her own family, with her two daughters and a grandson following in her footsteps as Montessori educators, ensuring that her vision and influence would continue to shape the lives of students for generations to come.
