Continuing the Legacy since 1971

Our story begins right here in Houston, Texas, a half century ago. In 1971, the Foundation for Child Development (a non-profit created to assist educational institutions), was founded, and with their help, the Palmer Montessori School was born. After two years, the Foundation began operation of the Houston Montessori Center, a Montessori teacher education center.

We offered our first course as Houston Montessori Center in 1974, and quickly sought evaluation from the American Montessori Society and Texas Education Agency (TEA). We received accreditation status from the American Montessori Society and approval to operate from TEA. Then the real growth began.

In 1974, we parted ways with the Foundation, moved our home to Kipling Street and legally became our own entity. Throughout the 70’s and 80’s we expanded our education courses to include infant and toddler, early childhood and elementary school teacher training.

By 1993, we had outgrown our Kipling home and moved to a new and larger facility off  Katy Freeway where we added Secondary I. Within two years, we upgraded to larger facilities in the space, and in June of 2004, a Secondary II course and administrator courses for school leaders were added.

In the Spring of 2006, we landed in our current home on Longpoint Road. After 46 years of expansion, we found a space that accommodates all onsite learning for our courses with room for more growth.

We have responded to many requests to staff numerous out-of-state Montessori training programs and continues to do so at this time. Courses have been operated at:

  • Tulane University, New Orleans

  • College of St. Catherine, Minneapolis

  • Fort Worth Independent School District

  • Houston Independent School District

  • Victoria Independent School District

  • Yakima Independent School District

  • Cincinnati Independent School District

  • Waco Independent School District

  • Baylor University, Waco.

Staff members also serve as workshop leaders at AMS meetings, seminars and individual schools.

Houston Montessori Center is proud to be continuing the legacy, started by Maria Montessori.

Our colors represent Natural Growth (green) and Ambition (purple) and a tonal range that brings our diversity to light. Our tagline “Continuing the Legacy” celebrates the vast history since 1971 – everything that we have become – and it inspires our collective future, connecting the teachings of Maria Montessori to an eternity of generations to come.

It is our responsibility to educate the teachers of the future. While our work at HMC starts in the classroom, Maria Montessori has passed on the methods that allow us to fuel hope, inspiration, and passion in everyday life, well beyond these walls. Together, we are proud to be continuing the legacy >
